The Award-Winning Aurland Lookout in Norway

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 10:38 AM PDT

Some regions of the world offer unique and amazing views. Those areas deserve to be admired but not necessarily from the cozyness of a house, hotel or any other similar structure. The beauty of those areas lies in their unexplored nature. Those are areas that deserve to remain as such so it would be really selfish to use them for our personal benefit. But a lookout, on the other hand, would be something that everyone can enjoy and it would be especially designed to allow us to admire the natural beauty of the landscape.

The Aurland Lookout is located in Norway and it's an award-winning contemporary structure designed by Bergen-based architect Todd Saunders and Røyneberg-based Tommie Wilhelmsen. It was completed in 2006 and the main principle behind this project was to place nature first and architecture second. The architects tried to create a structure that would have as little impact on the natural surroundings as possible. They wanted to protect the nature and the landscape but to also allow us to admire them in their entire beauty.

The architects tried to avoid inserting too many elements into the site so they opted for a minimalist design with an expressive form. This way they managed to conserve and also to complement the natural habitat. The Aurland Lookout has 30 viewpoints. It's a 4m structure that stretches out 30m wide over the pine trees. It's only 9 meters high but it captures the entire scenery.

DrinKlip Cup Holder

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 09:52 AM PDT

I love gadgets of all sorts and I think they are great. They make our lives a lot easier or at least a lot more fun. Of course some people might think you are eccentric if you have or use too many gadgets, but I like this modern era of technology because it brings a lot of gadgets that you can use in all fields. For example when I go to the office I just hate putting my steaming cup of coffee directly on the desk because it is kind of shiny and I hate to ruin its look. Ok, I can use a coaster, but there is always the danger to tip the coffee cup over and spill the liquid on my laptop, which is not so great any more. Well, this DrinKlip Cup Holder might be just the right solution for me.

It is based on such a simple idea that I am amazed nobody else had it before. It looks like a clothes pin except the fact that it is a lot larger and it can be clipped to the side of your table or desk. It can hold a range of cups with different diameters. The item is available in different colours and can be purchased for just $6.99.

Spectacular modern residence in the Arizona Desert

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 07:13 AM PDT

Even though it's a difficult destination with harsh weather, the Arizona Desert is also representative for the unique views it offers. This residence is located North of Scottsdale in Arizona and it offers some of the most amazing views that constantly change but that never cease to be spectacular.

The house occupied an area of 6,300 square feet. It has 5 bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms and it was designed by architect Mark Tate of Tate Design Studio. The main feature that inspired the design was the landscape and the views. These were the only factors that made the clients buy this property. Then they decided to build a house that would allow them to admire them and to really help them make their dream come true. They were previously living in a closed-in house that didn't really allow them to enjoy any kind of connection with nature and with the surrounding environment. So when they heard about this property they immediately knew they wanted to make it their home.

They build their house in 2011. It was designed in a way that would allow them to make the most of the mountain views. The sun orientation was a very important factor in determining the orientation of the house. The architect used 3-D modeling on a computer to come up with the optimal design and to allow the clients to enjoy amazing sunsets every day. Inside, the house has an open floor plan with a great room and a smaller area beyond it. Every room of the house features floor-to-ceiling glass walls with panoramic views of the landscape.

Sleek bathroom sink by ArtCeram

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 06:28 AM PDT

A modern bathroom is characterized by sleek furniture and simple fixtures. Minimalism has made its way through all the rooms of the house, including this one. The bathroom sink is maybe not the first thing that you see when entering the room but the most utilized accessory in there. This particular sink has a design that would make any modern bathroom look stunning.

There are some restrictions when it comes to integrating the sink into the bathroom. For example, its dimensions and shape make it more suitable for large bathrooms. The sink needs to stand on a flat platform for stability and it also needs to be matched with similar fixtures and furniture pieces. It was designed by ArtCeram and it's a part of the Naked collection. As the name suggests, the components of this collection have stripped the designs and reduced them to minimalism. It's the shape and pure design that makes them stand out.

The lack of decorations and accessories allow you to focus on the design itself and it makes it easier to find matching products. The sink has a very slim and sleek design. Its dimensions give plenty of space for the water to disperse. The design is contemporary and geometrical, introducing a new way of perceiving these objects. The ArtCeram sink would be a very stylish addition to any modern and contemporary bathroom but, preferably, one with large dimensions.

Spacious Home in Hong Kong by Peter Ho

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 05:52 AM PDT

In the crowded cities everybody is eager to get more space, especially for his or her home. Although you may admire the high buildings, you may like the city agitation, home is a place which is meant to make you forget about the disadvantages produced by these crowded areas which remain so attractive for many people. Hong Kong is one of these cities where those who are the owners of a spacious house are very lucky.

Here, more precisely, in Yuen Long, New Territories, in the Vineyard area there is such a spacious home owned by a couple and their two sons. It is a modern house where white, grey and black nuances seem to dominate all the spaces. Peter Ho is the interior designer who took care of all the arrangements of this house which covers a surface of 3,458 square feet. Each item used for all the interiors was meant to bring more space and light.

The spacious living room has floor to ceiling drapes, a modern fireplace and an elegant white and black sofa where some blue pillows bring a little bit of more color. The focal point of this area is represented by the wall-to-wall shelving unit which has an interesting design which makes you think of a puzzle or a labyrinth. It was used to link the living area, dining area and the open kitchen while the interior stairs increase the idea of more space.Outdoor, a raised platform was used for the outdoor modern funiture which offers a comfortable and relaxing space for all the family.

In the open kitchen most of the appliances are flush-mounted so that more space is saved. The bedside lanterns in the master bedroom create the peaceful ambiance and a soft light which are perfect for such a space. At the basement wood seems to bring more warmth which was used for the bookshelves or the spacious desk for two.{found on houzz}.

Most of our knowledge comes from others. When someone is good as something, they share those information with the rest of the world and this way we all get to assimilate them. Books a great way of transmitting information and they cover all domains, including interior design. "Living on the coast" is a very inspiring book written by Barclay Butera.

The author analyzes a range of seaside homes. He classifies them into five categories (Cottage Beach, Classic Beach, Serene Beach, Modern Beach and Elegant Beach) and he then takes ach style and develops it. Most of the homes given as examples are bright and serene. They follow a variety of themes but most of them are classical, such as the nautical theme.

Each example is followed by advices. They include information related to the fabrics and textures that go with that particular style and décor. The designer also gives advice in terms of color, prints and how to mix them in order to create a balanced décor. The book is written in a very friendly manner, as if the author would talk to a student. He shares his secrets and lets us into his own world. The cross stitch-inspired Canevas Collection by Charlotte Lancelot

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 02:00 AM PDT

The Belgium designer Charlotte Lancelot impressed us with embroidered rugs presented at Salone del Mobile, 2012 during Milan Design Week. They were a modern reinterpretation of an otherwise old technique usually seen is decorations and accessories. This technique was basically reinvented and transposed on a series of new surfaces. The same designer is now back with a bigger collection.

This is the Canevas Collection. It was designed for Spanish brand Gan Rugs and this time it includes, besides rugs, a series of cushions and modular or soft poufs. The same technique was used to create a series of cross stitch-inspired pieces featuring abstract patterns. These designs have a dual look. On one hand, they feature vintage patterns that remind us old times. However, on the other hand, this is a modern reinterpretation of those patterns featuring an innovative technique. So even though the starting point and the inspiration are old, the results are new and innovative.

The rugs are very versatile and also very pleasant at the touch. Also, they feature floral and abstract patterns that make suitable to a variety of different decors. The furniture pieces have simple designs and geometrical shapes with clean lines. They have a casual look and are very comfortable. And to make the image complete, the designer also created a series of decorative pillows featuring the same designs and patterns.

A monastery turned into a residential loft by JM Architecture

Posted: 16 Jul 2012 12:45 AM PDT

This is Como Loft, a project developed by JM Architecture in Milan, Italy. It's a residential complex build in what used to be a monastery. It's amazing how a monastery can be transformed into something like this. The metamorphosis was radical and there's almost no trace of the building's old history.

The project was completed in 2012. The monastery was remodeled and major changes had to be made, both in terms of design and internal structure. This apartment is one of the resulting spaces created inside the building. The apartment is really a duplex and it was created by adjoining two adjacent units. The differences in height and the ceiling direction are details that allow us a glimpse at the apartment's original structure.

When combining the two units to form a duplex, the architects tried to invade the space as minimally as possible. They wanted to preserve each apartment's structure but to also make it functional. To make the space cohesive but to also avoid making any radical changes, an enclosed box was inserted inside the apartment. It contains a small bedroom and two bathrooms. The duplex also has a small foyer, a large gallery that includes the living spaces, the kitchen and the dining room and a master bedroom. The interior décor is minimalist and bright. Traditional artwork and decorations were replaced by a projector that plays images on the wall above the kitchen.

Get a Royal Fun in Princess of Wales Pub in London

Posted: 15 Jul 2012 11:28 PM PDT

Everybody knows something about the Princess of Wales but perhaps not everybody knows something about a place where you can get a royal feeling and enjoy a royal like atmosphere. This is Princess of Wales Pub, a famous pub in London, located in Primrose Hill.Recently the pub has been renovated and a lot of modifications were brought to its interior and exterior design. The idea was also to get a new bar, an open kitchen and a new restaurant area. Space Design Studios, a prestigious company, the winner of many prizes in the domain of interior design was asked to renovate Princess of Wales and try to keep the charm of a royal atmosphere.

Thus, the details and decorative finishes were chosen carefully in order to create a place which could introduce you in another world where elegance and refinement could never be absent. A lot of golden and brown nuances were used so that everything was arranged in a harmonious way. You can see the golden frames of the large mirrors on the walls or other golden elements that make you think of the wealthy life of a monarch.

Light fixtures, the chandeliers or the vintage lampshades of other ceiling lamps create the perfect ambiance for such a place. Floral prints, paintings on the walls, wall coverings reflecting images of those old times are present all over the place, even in the bathroom. Perhaps a remarkable piece remains the two meter wide chandelier above the bar covered in mosaic which underlines the basic idea of this renovation, the use of artwork.
